So You’re Setting Up a Shopify Loyalty Program: 10 Things to Consider

  • Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC) – how much does it cost for you to acquire new customers via the loyalty program?
  • Redemption Rate – are your members using their rewards and how often?

2.0 Build Relationships 

Communication is a fundamental building block of any relationship, including those between business owners and customers. As part of your Shopify loyalty program, come up with a plan to communicate with your members regularly. This can include:

Most loyalty programs use either a points system or a series of stamps. Depending on the nature of your business, you need to choose which makes most sense for you. 

If you use a points system, you need to determine how many points are awarded for each action (i.e. signing up for newsletter, making a purchase, referring a friend, etc.), how many points are needed to earn a reward, and what the reward will be (i.e. a discount, a free product, etc.). 

With a stamp system, customers receive a stamp for each purchase (or amount spent) and you’ll need to decide how many stamps equal a reward and what that reward will be. The prime example of a stamp-based system is a coffee shop that offers the 10th cup of coffee free, but this can work for online stores as well.

7.0 Train your Staff 

Assuming you don’t work alone, you will need to educate your employees about the Shopify loyalty program that you’re offering. Staff will need to know how to:

  • Invite new customers to join the program
  • Process incoming sign-ups
  • Process reward redemptions
  • Follow-up on unredeemed awards
  • Troubleshoot or answer customer questions
